Geriatric patients' inalienable rights

Lisa Gibbs, MD
Dr. Lisa Gibbs, principal investigator for the HRSA Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), to train primary care workforce in geriatric principles.

We developed our curricula based on the premises that older adults have specific and inalienable rights.

With a burgeoning elder population, our healthcare focus must shift from merely keeping people alive to helping them live healthier, more meaningful lives.

In our Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), we want to help geriatric patients be at their best, so we developed our curricula based on the premises that older adults have specific and inalienable rights.

The Division of Geriatric Medicine & Gerontology maintains the philosophy that geriatric patients receive:

  • Care from professionals trained in geriatric medicine
  • Protection from elder mistreatment
  • Freedom from ageism and individual discrimination
  • Self-care management and shared decision-making
  • Care based on safety and quality
  • Access to and coordination of community resources
